Cape Horn & Patagonia Ports

The southern ports are about scenery and wildlife rather than museums: glaciers, channels, penguin colonies and snow-capped ranges that rise straight from the water. Weather changes quickly here, so dress in layers and choose tours that still work in wind or rain.

Cape Horn & Patagonia — FAQ

Where can I see penguins on a port day?

Magdalena Island near Punta Arenas, the Gypsy Cove and Volunteer Point areas around Stanley, and boat trips from Ushuaia are the classic options. Puerto Madryn, farther north, is the gateway to the large Magellanic colony at Punta Tombo.

Do Patagonian tours run in bad weather?

Most land tours go ahead in cold or rain, but boat trips and small-plane flights can be cut short or canceled when wind picks up. Having a land-based backup in mind is sensible.
